Young Members

Your Union Needs YOU!

NASUWT North East, North West and Yorkshire & Humberside are working together to form a Young Members Forum in the North.

This Thursday will be the first of several planning meeting via Zoom with Young Teachers.

We would love to hear your input! Our aim is to deliver a bespoke Young Teachers Training Day, in October, in Leeds. We want to know what you are interested in, what you would like us to deliver training sessions on for example ... How can we help you in the classroom? Which aspects of Trade Unions do you want to know about? Do you want to be be knowledgeable about your rights and responsibilities?

NASUWT is run by teachers for teachers, and many of them have spent decades in the classroom and have a lifetime of experience that they use to produce training on everything from Neurodiversity to Menopause Awareness. BUT WHAT DO YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT?

Please let us know. To get involved and attend future Young Teacher Forum Meetings contact the Regional Centre on 0191 5195300 or via northeast@mail.nasuwt.org.uk

Cassie Jones

2025 Young Activist of the Year Award

The Young Activist of the Year Award was presented at Annual Conference 2025 to Cassie Jones.
Cassie has been an active member of the Durham Association since 2022 and plays an important part in the Association’s Executive Committee, attending monthly meetings as well as local and regional events to represent the union.
Cassie is also a member of the NASUWT’s Young Members Advisory Committee, helping to shape the union’s campaign for a better deal for young teachers nationally.
As a supply teacher she champions the NASUWT in every school she works in.

We have been incredibly lucky to have such wonderful Young Activists in the North East, as at Annual Conference 2024 The Young Activist of the Year Award was presented to Kira Chan from the Middlesbrough Association.

Kira is a brilliant, proactive workplace rep who gives advice, guidance and support to her members on a daily basis.
She has been elected association President, having been an active member of the local executive for nearly three years and is an active participant in the Union’s national equalities consultation conferences.
Kira is a role model for young teachers locally and nationally on how being a good teacher and a good trades unionist are two sides of the same coin.

Looking forward to 2027 could the North East steal the show again? It could be you!
