Women members

The NASUWT organises a range of campaigns and activities to support women teachers and the Union’s National Women’s Advisory Committee has informed policy development on issues of concern to women members, including commissioning research on the pay and careers of women teachers and supporting campaigns on a range of issues such as violence against women and the under-representation of women in the political arena.

The mini hubs below draw together advice and information on a range of different issues under three broad headings and currently include:

  • Violence Against Women and Girls: domestic abuse, female genital mutilation, forced marriage, sexual harassment and our campaign for the ‘Elimination of Violence Against Women’

  • Women’s Health and Wellbeing: the menopause, endometriosis and our campaign ‘Valuing Maternity’

  • Women's Rights at Work: flexible working, maternity etc., women’s representation and pensions inequality.

In the North East we hold an annual North East Womens' Conference and this year it is held at our North East Regional Centre in Boldon Colliery on the morning of Saturday 16th May.

Candy Mellor (Chair of the Equalities Committee) and Andy Lewis (Chair of the Health & Safety Committee) have produced an excellent resource for Women members in the North East. The booklet is called The 5Ms and looks at Menstruation, Maternity, Miscarriage, Menopause and Mental Health. The 5Ms campaign provides information on these sensitive issues, provides relevant exemplar policies, looks at legislation that protects women in the workplace and suggests some ways that you can support members with these issues in the workplace.

We have held several Zoom and face-to-face sessions on this campaign and will continue to do so to continue to raise awareness. On Thur 26th March we are holding a session for specifically for Senior Leaders and an email has been sent to every HT in the North East. If nobody from your SLT are attending then please do encourage them to book a place. It is for NASUWT members and Non-Members and is FREE.
