NASUWT North East is proud to support Pride every year. Supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) teachers, the NASUWT is at the forefront of formulating policy on all equality issues relevant to teachers in the workplace and education in general. Moreover, the National Union has developed a range of policies and initiatives to enable schools/colleges to progress towards the goal of equality for all. The NASUWT holds an annual Consultation Conference for LGBTI teachers to assist the Union in formulating policy on relevant issues and to inform its work and future campaigns. The NASUWT also runs specialist professional seminars and training events for LGBTI members and supports a number of LGBTI campaigns and initiatives, including sponsoring UK Black Pride.

Newcastle Pride 23rd July @ Town Moor, Newcastle.

The North East Women's Group were proud to deliver the first North East Women's Conference with Candy Mellor at the helm as Chair of the Equalities Committee. and Women's Group.

The Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Kim McGuiness talked to us about how she wanted to make the North East a safer place for everyone including women and young girls with a number of inititiatives including the introduction of 'Ask me' ambassadors and the 'Safe nights for Women' campaign.

Kathryn from 'The Girls Network' explained how their mentoring scheme and ambassador programme works in the North East. Mentors give up their time to help young girls reach their potential by providing experiences to help them become successful, confident women.

Laura Daly from The Women's Banner Group talked about the 'Let them be heard' lesson they designed to be delivered in primary schools, however with a bit of tweaking this lesson would be suitable for a KS3 or KS4 PSHCE lesson (see resources above).

NASUWT is committed to mental health issues

NASUWT North East is committed to improving the mental health of teachers as well as children and young people in the North East. We would love our members to become involved in this campaign.

We have a moral duty to protect the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people. Yet in England, unlike in Northern Ireland, Wales or Scotland, there is currently nothing in law ensuring every school or college has access to high quality counselling support. Children without support are falling through the gaps. But there is something we can do to prevent this.

Citizens UK is launching a national campaign in partnership with the NASUWT and the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, calling on the Government to introduce statutory (legally-binding) provision of counselling in English primary schools, secondary schools and further education colleges.

NASUWT is committed to supporting members with a disability

The NASUWT offers development courses specifically for black and minority ethnic (BME) members, disabled members, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) members, women members, and young members.

The NASUWT is actively seeking to improve the participation of all under-represented groups in the running of the Union, and specifically encouraging members within traditionally under-represented groups to become Workplace Representatives and branch activists.

Our development courses are designed to give a flavour of what it is like to be an NASUWT activist; to identify barriers that exist for disabled and construct action plans both for members and the Union itself to remove those barriers.
